Ormond Beach’s Sophia Osipova and Orlando’s Jordan Lee won section tennis championship titles on Sunday in 10-and-under finals at the 2020 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Green Ball Sectional Championships, held Sept. 26-27 at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The top-seeded Lee in the boys’ final dominated No. 4-seeded Diego Custodio of Tampa, Fla., 5-4, 4-1.

Lee, who was the fifth-place overall finisher in the 2019 “Bobby Curtis” Green Ball Sectional Championships returned this year looking for victory, breezed through the tournament winning six 4-0 sets through five rounds. Lee did not face a fellow seeded player until defeating No. 5 Daniel Osipenko of Fort Myers in the semifinals, 4-1, 4-2.

It was a fight to the finish in the girls’ final, as No. 1-seeded Osipova squared off against No. 2 Britney Brace of Parkland, Fla. and battled to a 4-0, 4-0 victory. Osipova improved on her third-place finish last year at the “Bobby Curtis” Green Ball Sectional Championships.

The 4th grader is ranked No. 2 nationally and No. 1 in Florida and the Southeast on TennisRecruiting.com’s recruiting rankings. Osipova kicked off 2020 with a USTA tournament win back in January in the Girls’ 14 singles draw at the Julington Creek Plantation Level 6 in St. Johns, Fla. She reached the semifinals of the Daytona Beach Level 6 in August, where she fell to No. 1 seed and eventual champion Madelyn Martin.

Due to COVID-19 and the suspension of play throughout a portion of 2020, all qualifying tournaments for the 2020 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Green Ball Sectional Championships were canceled. This year an open selection process was utilized, taking the first 32 boys and 32 girls who registered to compete.
