Florida USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ 2016-17 Schedule Opens This Weekend

toc-logo-2016The 2016-17 USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ series of club tennis tournaments will feature eight events, concluding with the season-ending USTA Florida Section championships which will determine the Florida teams that advance to the USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ National Championships.

The season kicks off this weekend with the UM Ibis Open, hosted by the University of Miami at Crandon Park, the home of the annual ATP/WTA Miami Open. At last season’s UM Ibis Open the University of Florida beat visiting Big Ten heavyweights Ohio State and Wisconsin before topping the University of Central Florida in the final.

Tennis on Campus is the college and university club program open to all schools, providing year-round recreational competition between non-NCAA club teams, and wrapping up each school season with the Florida championships and a chance to qualify for the USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ National Championships.

2016-17 Florida Schedule:

Sept. 17-18 — UM Ibis Open, Key Biscayne
Sept. 24-25 — UF Gatorbowl, Gainesville
Oct. 22-23 — USF Bull Run, Tampa
Nov. 5-6 — Knightro Cup, Orlando
Nov. 19-20 — FGCU Dirty Bird Classic, Ft. Myers
Jan. 28-29 — FAMU/FSU Battle in the Capital, Tallahassee
Feb. 4-5 — FAU Tournament, Boca Raton
Feb. 25-26 — USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ Section Championships

Last year the University of Florida club tennis team capped a perfect 2015-16 season at the section championships, winning every tournament they participated in during the regular season and defeating the University of Miami 29-18 in the Gold Bracket final of the USTA Florida Tennis on Campus Section Championships. It was the first-ever appearance in the section championship final for UM, and the fourth consecutive section championships win for UF.

About USTA Tennis On Campus
The USTA’s Tennis On Campus program is designed to provide college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a NCAA varsity program. Tennis On Campus offers fun co-ed team-based play (using the World TeamTennis scoring format), regional and national championship competition, and helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years. Currently the program is offered on more than 500 college campuses. The USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ team format features men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, with a minimum of two men and two women per team.
