Day 2 Results: 2018 USTA Florida ‘Bobby Curtis’ Jr. State Tennis Championships

The seeds are about to meet as the USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships moved into the round of 16 after the second day of play on Sunday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando.

The majority of the Top 16 seeds in each division held firm for the most part, but a handful of unseeded players broke up the party on a hot and humid day in the Lake Nona area of Orlando.

Miami Shores’ Jonathan Irwanto ground out the biggest upset in the day in the boys’ 14s division, coming from a set down to defeat No. 3 seed Zak Vince of Clermont 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

On the flip side, every winner in the girls’ 12s draw on Sunday was seeded.

Recognizing upset-makers taking out Top 10-seeded players, in the boys’ 18s division Carlos Grande (Coral Gables) came from a set down to defeat No. 4 Spencer Gray (Boca Raton) 5-7, 7-5, 6-3; Randy Wilson (Miami) topped No. 8 Matthew Fung (Miami) 7-5, 6-3; and Patrick Sebastian (Delray Beach) muscled past No. 10 Andres Golindano (Miramar) 6-0, 6-3.

The girls’ 18s field will also contain a number of potential upset-makers entering round of 16 play on Monday as unseeded players Sophia Fornaris (Pinecrest), Alexis Blokhina (Plantation), Emma Heiderscheit (Bonita Springs), Maggie Pate (Lithia), and Alara Hollyfield (Tampa) were unseeded winners on Sunday.

The girls’ and boys’ 18s finals will be broadcast live with commentary on Wednesday beginning at 10 a.m., streamed on the USTA Florida YouTube channel.

In 2012 the tournament was renamed the USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Championships in honor of legendary Florida junior tennis organizer Bobby Curtis.
