Celebrating Character on and off the Court: 2026 Bobby Curtis Sportsmanship Awardees

The Bobby Curtis Junior State Championships took place June 5 through 16, drawing many of Florida’s most talented junior players to the courts. The two-week event produced its share of champions and finalists, athletes whose performance earned them titles and trophies. But not every winner walked away with a bracket in hand.

Many were recognized for something that does not show up on a scoreboard, their character. Sportsmanship is easy to overlook and impossible to fake. Junior tennis asks young players to call their own lines, manage their own nerves, and handle wins and losses without a coach on the court next to them. In that setting, how a player treats an opponent, respects an official’s call, or carries themselves after a tough match reveals who they really are.  

Sportsmanship also shapes the experience for everyone else. A respectful competitor makes the match better for their opponent. An encouraging family sets the tone in the stands. Good behavior is contagious, and it is a big part of what keeps kids coming back to the sport and growing within it. Recognizing character alongside performance sends a clear message about the kind of tennis community USTA Florida wants to build.
