Winter Haven One-on-One Doubles Tennis Tournament to Feature New Rule

Adult Tennis News

The $2,000 One-On-One Doubles Shootout on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at the Country Club of Winter Haven will feature a new rule change, the first for the crosscourt-only serve-and-volley format since its inception in 2004.

Players will now be awarded two points for a winning volley, half volley, overhead or topspin lob.

“The tournament’s former mandatory serve-and volley rule has been lifted and is now optional,” says tour organizer Ed Krass. “This allows for players to attack the net on their own terms when serving and returning, to include more participation and add more excitement.”

A USTA referee will be on site to confirm and reward 2-point plays.

“The new 2-point shot is on par with when the NBA adopted the 3-point shot,” says USTA Florida Player Development Coordinator Andy Gladstone.

Former ATP No. 29-ranked Pablo Arraya of Miami will be one of the confirmed players in the field.

All tournament matches will start at 11 a.m. and will be played in a round robin, short-set format, first to win four games, with no-ad scoring. All players will be guaranteed three matches before the quarterfinal knockout rounds.
