Volusia County’s Mary & Jerome McCoy named USTA Florida Tennis Volunteers of the Month

Volunteer Aces Volunteer Of The Month General News

Family is one of the most important things in life and combining that with tennis can create memories that last a lifetime. For volunteers Mary and Jerome McCoy, they’ve done just that and love to spend their time giving back to the community.

Mary first picked up tennis in the late 90’s, when a friend needed a player to start her Greater Volusia Tennis League 2.0 beginner tennis team. Even though she wasn’t an expert at first, she picked up the sport quickly and fell in love with it.

Mary and Jerome love to give back to the tennis community.

In 2005, Mary and her husband Jerome, who was also involved with tennis, decided they wanted to take their passion for the sport and find ways to get involved with it outside of playing. So, the two became volunteers in Daytona Beach within the Derbyshire Community and as USTA officials.

When they are not on the courts officiating matches, they spend a lot of time in the Derbyshire Community. They played an instrumental role in helping the tennis facility become a National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL) Chapter in 2021.

The couple was also nominated for the USTA Florida Outstanding Family Award to recognize their hard work and dedication to growing grassroots tennis for the past 17 years.

Mary and Jerome also dedicate their time to coaching high school tennis. For 14 years, they have shared their knowledge with junior players, in hopes of getting them prepared to play for college and the pro level.

Their peers have taken note of their determination of growing the sport. “Mary and Jerome give so much back to the community without hesitation. For many years they were paying for everything out of pocket until Derbyshire Community Tennis became a nonprofit organization,” one person said. “They do remarkable work in the Daytona area and should be recognized for their efforts.

USTA Florida thanks and congratulates Mary and Jerome McCoy as the USTA Florida Volunteers of the Month for December 2022 as key members in helping the tennis community of Volusia County grow and serving as a USTA official.

ABOUT MARY & JEROME

Family Members: Daughter Maquisha McCoy, Sons, Mancle, Devin, Grandchildren, Trent, Trey, and Janayla

When we are not playing tennis we are… “Creating lasting memories with my family. Encompassing a plethora of things, we enjoy theme parks, cruises, pop Warner football, tennis, dining out. You name it, anything we can enjoy together to make those lasting memories.”

Our best tennis memory is… “When the DCT Inc. Volunteers band together and worked for years with the City of Daytona to get 10 and under courts, installed at Derbyshire Tennis facility and resurface the remaining courts. This was a major accomplishment for the program.”

We like to volunteer in tennis because… “Being able to represent and provide free tennis lessons for participants in my community, who may not otherwise get the opportunity to be a part of this amazing sport.”
