Squads representing four separate counties took home divisional crowns at the USTA Florida Adult 40 & Over 3.0/4.0/5.0 Sectional Championships, held July 17-19 at the USTA National Campus. The women’s 4.0 and men’s 3.0 and 4.0 divisions played their matches on clay, while the women’s 3.0 and the two 5.0 divisions took to the hard courts.

Miami-Dade and Broward counties logged their first wins of the 2021 season over the weekend in the 3.0 divisions. Defending the men’s 3.0 title for the third consecutive year was the squad from Broward County (Midtown Athletic Club, Weston). The Broward men dominated the competition with a perfect 3-0, logging 10 court victories and 20 sets won. Duval County (Sawgrass Racquet Club, Ponte Vedra Beach) was the runner-up with 18 sets earned and eight individual matchup wins for a 2-1 record.

One of the largest groups of the weekend was the women’s 3.0, with a total of 18 teams split across four flights. Miami-Dade (Kendall Tennis Training Center, Miami), Duval County (San Jose Country Club, Jacksonville), Polk County (Beerman Family Tennis Center, Lakeland) and Orange/Seminole/Lake (USTA National Campus, Orlando) all advanced to the semifinals after claiming the top spots in the early flight round-robins. The championship dual came down to Duval and Miami-Dade, with the Miami-Dade squad taking home the crown with wins on the singles court and doubles lines two and three.

Duval County wouldn’t go home empty-handed though, as the men’s 4.0 pitted the Duval squad  (San Jose Country Club, Jacksonville) against Broward County (Lauderdale Tennis Club, Fort Lauderdale) in the final. Despite dropping the singles court, Duval swept all three doubles matchups to capture the title on the backs of Eduardo Andrade and Lou Body on court one, Eugene Kasper and Patrick Regan on line two, and Troy Bryant and Lee Braun on court three.

It was a neighboring county rivalry in the 4.0 women’s final, as Hillsborough County (River Hills Country Club, Valrico) and Polk County (Country Club of Winter Haven, Winter Haven) went head-to-head in the championship dual. Hillsborough’s Shannon Deck claimed the singles court for the squad, while teammates Frances Swartz and Jackie Caouette joined forces to secure an extended 6-4, 6-7, 1-0 victory in the second doubles spot. The match came down to the wire as Polk claimed doubles lines one and three, but Hillsborough edged out the victory to take home the Sectional title.

Hillsborough was the only county to leave the USTA National Campus with two titles, also taking home the women’s 5.0 division, beating out Orange/Seminole/Lake 1-0, 0-1.

The competing teams represented various clubs, parks, recreational departments and organizations, and finished at the top of their local leagues during the 2021 season to advance to the USTA Florida Mixed 40 & Over 3.0/4.0/5.0 Sectional Championships.
