Councilwoman Rivera Saves Tennis Court for At-Risk Kids in Palm Beaches

Gladiator-Park-signGreenacres Councilwoman Lisa Rivera stepped in to save a single tennis court at a local park, partnering it with a tennis program for at-risk youth run by the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office and the Police Athletic League.

The city had been planning to turn the tennis court into a basketball court.

The sheriff’s office and the PAL-run TEAM, or, Tennis Education and Mentoring First, is a program to reach out to at-risk kids by providing tennis instruction, educational programs and mentoring opportunities.

“She obviously has a passion for this,” said Scott Scrivner, a PBSO unit manager and executive director for the sheriff’s office PAL program. “She was super excited when I told her this was something we could make happen. Whenever someone comes to us with something that’s going to help the kids, we do what we can.”

There are 82 kids in the PAL’s tennis program at four sites — Belle Glade, South Bay, Cabana Colony and Lake Worth West Community Center, Scrivner said.
