Lori Burdell, recreation programmer for Clearwater’s McMullen Tennis Complex since July 2014, was named USPTA District 7B Clearwater/St. Petersburg’s Pro of the Year and was recognized last month at Florida’s USPTA meeting in Naples.

Since coming to Florida, the Pittsburgh native has taught at various country clubs in the area, including East Lake Woodlands, Royal Racquet Club and Palma Ceia Country Club, and coached the women’s tennis team at the University of Central Florida 1988-1991.

Burdell played tennis for West Virginia University and was the first female to receive a full tennis scholarship there.

Her goals with Clearwater include creating tennis programs for adults and juniors to maximize court usage and increase revenue.

Morning Star School Tennis Classic Raises $19K for Learning Challenges

Tennis PlayersThe 28th Annual Morning Star School Tennis Classic hosted 110 players at the Carrollwood Country Club in Tampa. The men’s, women’s and mixed doubles event netted $19,000 for the Morning Star Catholic School located in Tampa.

Women’s winners included Debbie Beardsley & Rachel Mayberry in B/4.0 Doubles, Kathryn Mudano & Karen Potter C/3.5 Doubles and Valerie Reed & Lorraine Strobridge in D/3.0 Doubles.

In men’s doubles, Sean Vickery & Tim Shadrick won the 4.5 division, Bill Archer & Tom Wise the 4.0 and John Cotey & George Daws the 3.5.

Mixed doubles champions were Gyorgl Zsiros & Sean Vickery in 4.5, Char Turk & William Orchard 4.0 and Sharon Patterson & John Cotey 3.5.

“These funds will be used to help our elementary and junior high age students with learning disabilities, autism and other learning challenges,” said Administrative Coordinator of the Morning Star Catholic School Paul Reed. “The school’s goal is to help develop the academic and life skills they need to achieve greater success and happiness in life.”
