Tallahassee Tennis Blog: Athletes Raise Trophies at Special Olympics Games

More than 375 athletes and 150 volunteers participated in the Area 3 Special Olympic Games on Sunday at Leon High School in Tallahassee.

The weather was outstanding for the athletes who participated in track and field events, tennis, soccer, and softball for competitors from Leon and surrounding counties. Special Olympics provides sports training and competition throughout the year for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The tennis events utilized the new USTA national format, including a skills competition, Red Ball 1, Red Ball 2, Orange Ball, Yellow Ball 2, and unified doubles.

Some of the athletes will move on to the Florida state competition in early summer and possibly on to nationals.

I have been the volunteer Community Events Coordinator for the Tallahassee Tennis Challenger for more than 10 years and am a volunteer for special events with the Tallahassee Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Affairs.
