7 Florida Players Selected for U.S. International Sr. Tennis Team

Allan Carter (Boca Raton); Fred Farzanegan (Tampa); King Van Nostrand (Vero Beach); Carol Clay (Fort Lauderdale); Ria Graham (New Port Richey); Doris Jane Lutz (Sarasota) and Rose Austin (Naples). have been selected by the USTA to represent the USA in the 34th annual International Tennis Federation (ITF) Super Senior International Team Competition in Antalya, Turkey October 13-18, 2014.

These teams are the senior equivalent of Davis or Fed Cup. The top American tennis players in age divisions 60-80 will represent the USA in this prestigious competition. The USA is the defending champion of the Von Cramm Cup (men 60+), Jack Crawford Cup (men 70+), Bitsy Grant Cup (men 75+), Gardnar Mulloy Cup (men 80+), Alice Marble Cup (women 60+), and Queens Cup (women 75+). The USA finished second in the Kitty Godfree Cup (women 65+) and Althea Gibson Cup (women 70+), fourth in the Britannia Cup (men 65+) and fifth in the Doris Hart Cup (women 80+). These events were contested on red clay in Austria and the Czech Republic in 2013. Following the ITF Seniors World Team Championships the ITF World Individual Championships will take place October 19-26 at the same venue.

Carter has been named to the Jack Crawford Cup team along with playing captain Jimmy Parker (Santa Fe, NM), Jack Metalsky (Manhattan Beach, CA) and Jody Rush (Tummwater, WA). Carter took third at this year’s 65 Hard in singles, but really shone in the Florida Super Cat II, winning the 2013 and 2014 Raymond James tournaments and reached the final at Longboat Key last winter and at the West Coast Super Cat II this year.

Farzanegan has been named to the Bitsy Grant Cup team along with Robert Quall (Merced, CA) and William Wolff (Ft. Worth, TX). The fourth member of the team will be announced soon. Farzanegan was also selected to be the playing captain of this team. Farzanegan won the 2013 75 Indoors and was a finalist at the 2013 Clay in singles and doubles.

Van Nostrand has been named to the Gardnar Mulloy Cup team along with Neil Hurlbut (Big Canoe, GA), John Powless (Madison, WI) and George McCabe (Oxford, OH). Van Nostrand was a 75s singles finalist and 75s doubles champion at the 2013 ITF Super Senior World Championships in Austria. This year he’s gone unbeaten in the 80s and just won the 80 Clay over Hurlbut. Van Nostrand has won nine ITF Seniors World Championships in singles.

Clay was selected to the Kitty Godfree Cup team along with playing captain Brenda Carter (Charleston, SC) Martha Downing (Shingle Springs, CA) and Kathy Bennett (Laguna Woods, CA). Clay won the 65 singles bronze at the 2013 and 2014 Clay.

Graham was named to the Queens Cup for the second time. She reached the singles final of the 75 Clay in 2013 and placed third there in 2014. She combined with teammate Roz King (San Diego, CA), to win the 75 ITF World doubles title in Austria in 2014. Joining King and Graham on this team are playing captain Dori deVries (Rancho Mirage, CA) and Burnett Herrick (Tarboro, NC).

Lutz and Austin will represent the USA on the Doris Hart Cup team along with playing captain Margaret Canby (San Antonio, TX) and Mary John Lynch (Rockport, TX). Lutz won the 2013 80 Indoor singles and 2014 80 Grass doubles title and in the 85s was unbeaten in singles in 2013, winning the Hard, Clay, Grass and Indoors. She also won the 2013 ITF World Championships in 85 singles and doubles. Austin won the 80 Clay and Grass national doubles titles in 2014 and placed third at the Hard.
