One-on-One Doubles Tennis This Weekend in Naples

General News

This Saturday the Naples Grande in Naples, Fla., will host the $2,000 Men’s & Women’s ITA Coaches One-on-One Doubles Shootout from 3:30-7 p.m., as the 14th annual event is held during the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Coaches Convention.

“One-on-One Doubles is the half-court singles game played crosscourt with the alley included,” said organizer Ed Krass. “Players will receive two points for winning volleys, half-volleys, overheads and topspin lobs that the opponent cannot touch. Serve and volley is optional but recommended.”

The ITA is sponsoring $2,000 in prize money with $1,000 for each the men’s and women’s events. The tournament is played in the round-robin format, with short no-ad sets leading into the knockout rounds.

“The draws always attract former ATP and WTA players and former all-American collegiate players,” Krass said.

Since One-on-One Doubles’ inception in 2004, the game has been played at ATP, ITA, USTA and USPTA national conventions and tournaments.

Last year’s men’s winner was Ryler DeHeart, former US Open participant and current USTA national coach. Past women’s champions have included Gretchen Rush, former Wimbledon and US Open doubles quarterfinalist.
