Miami Beach’s Yubel Ubri and Pensacola’s Gabriella Goyins won the boys’ and girls’ Florida state 10-and-under singles titles at the 2016 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” 10 & Under Green Ball Sectional Championships, held Oct. 22-23 at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach.

The two-day singles and doubles championships use the lower-compression Green Ball, and replace the 10-and-under division formerly played at the annual USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Championships.

The No. 8-seeded Goyins in the girls’ final defeated unseeded Meadow Garcia of Orlando 4-1, 4-1 in the abbreviated-scoring 10-and-under format which feature no-ad set scoring up to four games, and tiebreakers in lieu of third sets.

Goyins in the semifinals defeated unseeded Tatyana Leontyeva of Palm Coast from a set down 2-4, 4-1, 7-4. Garcia in her semifinal beat Miami’s Victoria Miranda 4-1, 4-1.

Ubri, seeded No. 6, in the boys’ final upended top seed Makani Burga of Islamorada 4-1, 2-4, 7-5. Ubri in his semifinal defeated Ormond Beach’s unseeded Timothy Pleasant 4-0, 4-0, while Burga beat No. 8-seeded Benjamin Saltman of Winter Haven 4-0, 4-2.

It was the first state junior title for Goyins and Ubri.

Players qualified for the championships by winning or reaching the final at any of the 16 10-and-under ‘Level 6 Designated’ events held throughout the year in the Florida Section. Players must be Florida residents, meet age eligibility requirement for tournament, and may participate even if they have progressed to the Yellow Ball-level in the USTA Florida Youth Progression Pathway.

Matches were played on 78-foot full-size courts using Green-dot Balls. Draws were 32-player compass, and doubles was played using a round robin format.

In 2012 the tournament was renamed the USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Championships in honor of legendary Florida junior tennis organizer Bobby Curtis. Former “Bobby Curtis” 10s winners include eventual junior Grand Slam finalists, USTA Pro Circuit title winners, USTA national championship tournament winners, members of NCAA championship-winning teams, and pro tour players.
