Florida’s Serena Williams to Play Fed Cup for U.S. in February

General News Pro Tennis

Team USA will bring the all-star power next month for Fed Cup as the USTA announced on Wednesday that former No. 1 Serena Williams will lead the U.S. squad against Latvia.

The Fed Cup Qualifying round match will be played Feb. 7-8, 2020, at Angel Of The Winds Arena in Everett, Wash.

The remainder of the team has yet to be chosen, but U.S. captain Kathy Rinaldi will have a number of high-powered choices to join the No. 9-ranked younger Williams sister, including No. 11 Madison Keys, No. 15 Sofia Kenin, No. 19 Alison Riske, No. 22 Amanda Anisimova, No. 25 Sloane Stephens, and No. 27 Danielle Collins.

The 23-time Grand Slam champion Williams last played Fed Cup in February 2018 in her competitive return to tennis following the birth of her daughter. She’s 13-0 in singles and 3-2 in doubles over 10 Fed Cup ties played since 1999, when she and sister Venus were a part of the Americans’ Fed Cup title-winning team.

The qualifying competition vs. Latvia is a best-of-five match series, four singles and one doubles match, played over two days, with each country bringing a team of 4-5 players. Matches will be played at Angel Of The Winds Arena on a temporary indoor hard court, with an amended schedule possible for Saturday should one nation clinch victory in the third or fourth singles match.

The winner of the match-up advances to the new-format 2020 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals on April 14-19 in Budapest, Hungary, where 12 nations converge on one venue to compete for the title.
