Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ 2015-16 Schedule Features ATP Delray Event

Tennis On Campus - Billboard 1The 2015-16 USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ series of club tennis tournaments will feature eight events, including a new Delray Beach stop coinciding with the 2016 Delray Beach Open, an ATP World Tour event, and all events leading to the season-ending USTA Florida Section championships.

Tennis on Campus is the college and university club program open to all schools, providing year-round recreational competition between non-NCAA club teams, and wrapping up each school season with the Florida championships and a chance to qualify for the USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ National Championships.

Florida event hosts in 2015-16 will be the University of Florida in Gainesville (UF Gatorbowl), Florida A&M University and Florida State University in a partner event (FAMU/FSU Battle in the Capital) in Tallahassee, the University of South Florida in Tampa (USF Bull Run), the University of Tampa debuting an event (UT Spartan Challenge), the University of Central Florida in Orlando (Knightro Cup), the University of Miami (UM Ibis Open) in Coral Gables, Florida Gulf Coast University in Ft. Myers (FGCU Dirty Bird Classic), and the new Delray Beach Campus Challenge coinciding with the 2016 Delray Beach Open, an ATP World Tour event, on Feb. 13-14, 2016.

“The 2015-2016 season is one of the most highly-anticipated seasons this program has seen in a long time,” says USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ Coordinator Desirae McLaughlin. “With the addition of the University of Tampa Spartan Challenge to the regular season, and not to mention our first professional collaboration with the ATP Delray Beach Open, the series provides endless opportunities for students to compete and have a spectacular time doing it.”

The season will wrap up with all teams competing at the USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ Section Championships in Altamonte Springs, Fla.

Oct. 3-4 — FAMU/FSU Battle in the Capital, Tallahassee
Oct. 24-25 — USF Bull Run, Tampa
Nov. 7-8 — UT Spartan Challenge, Tampa
Nov. 21-22 — Knightro Cup, Orlando
Jan. 23-24 — UM Ibis Open, Coral Gables
Jan. 30-31 — FGCU Dirty Bird Classic, Ft. Myers
Feb. 13-14 — Delray Beach Campus Challenge
Feb. 27-28 — USTA Florida ‘Tennis on Campus’ Section Championships, Altamonte Springs

At last year’s season-ending championships the University of Florida became the first school to advanced two teams to the top-level Gold Bracket final, with the UF-“A” team defeating the UF-“B” team in the championship match. FGCU was victorious in the Silver Bracket final, defeating USF, and UM in the Bronze Bracket with a win over Stetson.

The USTA’s Tennis On Campus program is designed to provide college students with opportunities for team camaraderie, social networking, and rivaled competition through tennis without the rigors of a NCAA varsity program. Tennis On Campus offers fun co-ed team-based play (using the World TeamTennis scoring format), regional and national championship competition, and helps students maintain active and healthy lifestyles through their college years. Currently the program is offered on more than 500 college campuses. The USTA ‘Tennis on Campus’ team format features men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles, with a minimum of two men and two women per team.
