Finals Set for Monday at 2015 Florida Jr. State Doubles Tennis

The finals were set on Sunday in most every boys’, girls’, and mixed division in the 18s-10s age groups at the 67th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Doubles Championships, held Sept. 19-21, 2015, at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs (18s-16s age divisions), and at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach (14s-10s divisions).

The Boys’ 16s final will be a rare all-unseeded affair, featuring Gainesville’s Cacciatore brothers, Grey and Harry, against the team of Dylan Breslaw/Tomas Martinez from Port St. Lucie.

The Cacciatore brothers upset the No. 1 seeds in the quarterfinals and the No. 4 seeds in the semifinals, both in straight sets. Breslaw/Martinez ousted the No. 6 seeds in the quarterfinals 12-10 in the third-set tiebreak, and the No. 2 seeds in the semifinals 10-5 in the third-set breaker.

A No. 1 vs. No. 2 final in the Boy’s 18s was upended in the semifinals when 2012 Mixed 16s winner Kaden Funk (Windermere) and partner Ninan Kumar (Orlando) upset No. 1 seeds Jose Andres Ortega (Miami)/Richie Torres (Key Biscayne) 6-2, 7-6(3). In the final they will meet No. 2 seeds Morgan Dill (Coral Gables) and Brandon Shanklin (Miramar).

Going by the book was play in the Girls’ 16s doubles as all four seeded teams advanced to the semifinals, and the final will feature No. 1 Sophia Edwards (Sarasota)/Amaya LopezClay (Delray Beach) vs. No. 2 Gia Cohen (Bradenton)/Imani Graham (St. Johns).

Edwards won the Girls’ 14s title last year and is a three-time mixed doubles winner. Cohen won the Girls’ 12s in 2012.

The Boys’ 10s champion was also determined on Sunday as Matthew Hewitt (Tampa) and Tanner Povey (Indian Rocks Beach) defeated Alexander Di Staulo (Weston) and Yubel Ubri (Miami Beach) 3-5, 4-1, 10-3 in the final.

Florida’s top event was renamed to honor the legendary Florida junior tennis organizer Bobby Curtis in 2012. The tournament is annually a launching pad for future college stars and pros.
