Day 3 Results — Upsets Galore at 2015 USTA Florida Jr. State Championships

Bobby Curtis Junior State Championships

Featured_In article Day 3The Girls’ 18s field became wide open on Monday at the 2015 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Championships at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach, where the No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 7 Girls’ 18s seeds made their exits prior to the quarterfinals.

Orchestrating upsets and moving into the quarterfinals round were No. 16 seed Sarah Swiderski of Wesley Chapel, No. 9 Anna Bright of Boca Raton, unseeded Shene Disbergen of Fort Lauderdale, No. 12 Adriana Reami of Miami, and unseeded Kate Paulus of Boca Raton. They were joined in the quarters by favorites No. 1 Mia Horvit of Palm City, No. 6 Erica Susi of Vero Beach, and No. 8 Taylor Russo of Deerfield Beach.

Unseeded Whitney Osuigwe of Bradenton, last year’s Girls’ 14s champion, moved into the quarterfinals of the Girls 16s with a 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-0 win over Imani Graham of Saint Johns, last year’s Girls’ 12s champion. She is one of three unseeded players in the Girls’ 16s quarterfinals.

In Girls’ 14s play unseeded Abigail Rencheli of Sarasota was the Cinderella story, in the round of 16 moving past No. 7 seed Anna Waller of Wesley Chapel by walkover, then becoming the only unseeded player to make the semifinals after a win over unseeded Maria Rizzolo of Jupiter. Maria and her sister, top-seeded Kiana Rizzolo, both fell in the quarterfinals when Kiana was upset by No. 6 seed Rosie Dickson of Bradenton. None of the top 4 seeds remain in the Girls’ 14s semifinals.

In the Boys’ 14s, No. 11 seed Randy Wilson of Miami was the breakthrough player, upsetting No. 2 Spencer Gray of Boca Raton in the round of 16, then moving into the semifinals with another straight-set victory over unseeded Andy Mackler of Lake Mary.

The 12s divisions also saw big upsets in the quarterfinals as No. 6 seed Michael Nicholls of Aventura ousted No. 1 seed Sebastien Dounchis of Naples in boys’ play, and in the girls’ No. 8 seed Nyjah Head of Miami upset No. 3 Maya Rukosuev of Altamonte Springs 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to gain the semifinals.

A three-hour rain delay at the Florida Tennis Center held up play in the 18s and 16s divisions.
