Day 1 Results-2015 USTA Florida Jr. State Championships
Five Top 8-seeded players and a number of lower seeds in the boys’ and girls’ 18-12 divisions fell victim to the upset bug on Day 1 of the 2015 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Championships at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach and sites in Orlando.
Among the biggest upsets, in the Boys’ 16s Shubham Aggarwal of Coconut Creek surprised No. 1 seed Russell Benkaim of Osprey 6-1, 6-2; in the Boys’ 18s Palm Coast’s Jason Legall upended No. 2 seed Andrew Heller of Weston 6-3, 0-6, 7-6(3); and in the Girls’ 14s Isabella Montana of Cutler Bay topped No. 3 seed Willa Breunich of Port Saint Lucie 6-1, 6-1.
Unseeded Whitney Osuigwe of Bradenton, the Girls’ 14s champion last year, upset No. 15 seed Ellie Wright of Gainesville 6-1, 6-3 in the first round of Girls’ 16s play.
Rain suspended some play in the 14s and 12s divisions to Sunday.
