Coconut Creek’s Kuzuhara Wins Easter Bowl Tennis Boys’ 14s Singles Title

Florida junior players lifted a singles and doubles runner-up trophies at the adidas Easter Bowl, the USTA National Spring Championships, which finished on Sunday at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.

No. 10 seed Bruno Kuzuhara (Coconut Creek, Fla.) won the boys’ 14s title, in the final upsetting No. 1 Samir Banerjee (Basking Ridge, N.J.) 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The unseeded pair of Christian Alshon (Boca Raton) and Tyler Zink (Lakewood Ranch) were runners-up in the boys’ 18s doubles, in the championship match falling to No. 2 seeds Trey Hilderbrand (San Antonio, Texas) and Govind Nanda (Cerritos, Calif.) 3-6, 6-3, 10-7.

Alshon is a four-time winner at the USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Doubles Championships.

Singles and doubles were contested across the 18s, 16s, 14s and 12s age groups. The East Bowl is the first of five junior USTA National Championship events — the USTA adidas Junior Championship Series — of 2018 and counts John McEnroe, Tracy Austin, Jennifer Capriati and Andy Roddick among its previous champions.

Each year more than 120,000 players compete in USTA junior tournaments. Players compete in levels of competition through earned advancement in the 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s and 18s age divisions. USTA junior tournaments help kids take their game as far as they want — high school, college or pros — or just have fun competing.
