Florida One-on-One Doubles Tournaments Kick Off in April

Sideblock_One-On-One DOublesOne-On-One Doubles Tournaments, called “the third game of tennis” next to traditional singles and doubles and sanctioned by USTA Florida, will kick off this year’s circuit of events with two tournaments in April in Tarpon Springs (Pinellas County) and Orlando.

The format is contested between two players who rally cross-court only, emphasizing serve-and-volley play, with short-set, no-ad scoring. Matches go quickly, participants face a wider variety and number of players, and events typically include music in a fun atmosphere, with tournaments completed in one day. Events feature a variety of divisions including open/pro, by age, co-ed, and NTRP-rated play.

“To give an idea of the game’s format and parity, one of the past tournament’s female players, Trinity College Coach Gretchen Magers-Rush, a former Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist during her WTA playing days, defeated Henrik Bode, the eventual tournament champion, during her round-robin pool play,” said One-on-One Doubles organizer Ed Krass. “Bode, who coaches the top-ranked Division II Hawaii Pacific University team, defeated Greg Ouelette, a former ATP player and newly-named assistant men’s coach at Iowa, in the final.”

Andy Gladstone, player development coordinator for USTA Florida, says One-on-One Doubles Tournaments are fun for all levels of players, and are a great tournament alternative for players who do not want to give up an entire weekend.

“The One-On-One Doubles Tournaments have everything we hoped for,” Gladstone says. “It’s a time-sensitive, half-day format with plenty of entertainment and fun exhibited throughout the tournament. I have received rave reviews from both the players and the fans attending.”
