The 2017 USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Orange Ball Team Tennis Sectional Championships for players age 10-and-under featured competitors who qualified for the event during the year by winning or reaching the finals of one of 12 designated Orange Ball Level 7 Regional Qualifiers held between January to September. The event was contested on 60-foot courts.

“Most of the players got into the tournament through regional qualifiers, and the rest were invited based on Orange Ball match wins,” said USTA Florida Entry Level/High School Competitive Coordinator Thad Hawkes. “We did a waterfall formatting to create the teams, so the players teamed up with kids from various cities, and the coaches selected their teams through a blind draw so they all met each other the first day of the tournament.”

The finalist Monster Mash team, coached by Sarah Harkins, was comprised of players BreAnn Ferguson, Ania Martynuk, Jorge Cely, and Haruki Kaneta.

The event was held at the USTA National Campus’ Nemours Family Zone, which features eight permanent 36-foot courts and eight permanent 60-foot courts for youth and family play. Teams were placed in two pools, with the winner of each pool facing off in the final.
