USTA Florida & Aces in Motion Team Up to Honor Martin Luther King Jr. Legacy
USTA Florida partnered with the National Junior Tennis and Learning (NJTL), Aces in Motion to host a meaningful community event in Gainesville on January 17. Held in honor of the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, the event centered around the theme Serving on and off the court, bringing together tennis, reflection, and purposeful service.
On the tennis court, serving marks the start of every point, setting the tone for focus, effort, and intention. During the event, participants explored how that same concept applies beyond the lines of the court. Serving off the court reflects the values tennis instills, including discipline, respect, perseverance, and accountability. These qualities can guide young people as they grow into leaders who contribute positively to their communities.

The connection between tennis and service was a central focus throughout the day. Honoring the legacy of Dr. King means understanding that service is not limited to one space or role. Whether through sport, education, or advocacy, individuals have both the ability and responsibility to serve with love, fairness, and commitment to the greater good.
Students from Aces in Motion were asked to reflect on how they can serve both on and off the court. Diamond, who has been part of the Aces in Motion program for four years, shared her perspective on giving back. “One way I can serve on the court is by being respectful to my coaches, and when I am off the court is by volunteering in my community,” she said.

Kyle, another Aces in Motion student, spoke on the importance of leadership and involvement. “One way I can serve on the court is by challenging others to their best potential, and off the court I can volunteer to my local community,” he said.
By combining tennis instruction with thoughtful discussion, the event showcased the idea that lessons learned through sport can extend far beyond competition. USTA Florida and its NJTL’s continue to support students of all ages and abilities to use tennis as a pathway to character development, education, and community engagement.
