Celebrating Jewish Heritage Month: Powell Schneider
As Jewish Heritage Month shines a spotlight on the achievements and contributions of Jewish individuals and communities, Powell Schneider is using the power of tennis to build community and inspire future generations.
Powell’s connection to tennis began early, picking up a racquet when he was about five years old. He started taking lessons at his local park and quickly grew to love the sport. “Tennis has always been a sport I’ve loved,” he said. “Even though I’m not playing at a high level now, it still brings me a lot of joy. “
Currently, Powell uses that joy he finds in tennis to uplift Jewish athletes, including tennis players, through his work with Maccabi USA. As the organization’s Regional Engagement Officer, Powell helps manage community outreach, development, and alumni relations, all while promoting Jewish identity through sport.

His Maccabiah journey began in 2013 as a member of the USA Futsal team during the 19th Games in Israel. What started as an opportunity to represent his country quickly evolved into a life-changing experience. “It turned out to be one of the most impactful experiences of my life,” he said.
Now, as a leader in the movement, Powell helps ensure others get the same opportunity. “I’m always excited to support our athletes and help create opportunities for Jewish engagement through sport.”
What the Maccabiah Games and Jewish Heritage Month Means
The Maccabiah Games are more than just competition they’re a celebration of Jewish pride, connection, and resilience. “Participants foster lifelong bonds, and it allows athletes from all sorts of different backgrounds to unite under a shared heritage,” he said. “It’s empowering, especially for younger generations, to see themselves represented in such a vibrant, global community.”
One of his favorite components of the Games is the Israel Connect program, which gives youth and open division athletes a deep, emotional connection to the land and culture of Israel.

Jewish Heritage Month also provides a critical opportunity to recognize the contributions of Jewish individuals while strengthening awareness and intergenerational connections. In sports, it’s a chance to highlight the role Jewish athletes and leaders have played and continue to play in shaping meaningful experiences.
For Powell, what he does for the Jewish community is more than just a job. “Being part of the Maccabi movement is more than a job or a sport, it’s a commitment to strengthening Jewish identity, building community, and passing on values through shared experiences,” he said. “I’m proud to be part of something that continues to make a lasting impact both on and off the fields.”
