USTA Florida Brings First Entry-Level Coach Training to South Florida at Crandon Park

USTA Florida teamed up with USTA Coaching once again this past Saturday, bringing entry-level coach training to the Crandon Park Tennis Center on Key Biscayne. The workshop marked a significant milestone for coaching education in the state, reaching the furthest south USTA Coaching has traveled to date.

This gave aspiring coaches their first hands-on, on-court experience in a structured training environment. For many participants, it was their introduction to the fundamentals of teaching tennis and the first step on a pathway toward professional certification.

What is USTA Coaching?

USTA Coaching is the national governing body’s modern, flexible learning pathway designed for coaches at every stage of their journey, from parents and PE teachers to high-performance professionals. The framework offers two learning options: badges, which are short, targeted learning experiences tailored to specific coaching roles, and certifications, which represent professional credentials earned through a collection of badges and in-person workshops.

Entry-level trainings like the one hosted at Crandon Park are designed for those new to coaching, providing foundational skills in coaching principles, on-court instruction and player development. These workshops are typically the first real on-court experience coaches receive in their training, giving them the tools and confidence to begin working with beginner and low-intermediate players of all ages.

Coaches who complete the training gain a pathway toward Level 1 certification with an accredited certifying organization, opening the door to careers and volunteer opportunities in tennis across the state. From there, the possibilities branch out in many directions depending on who a coach wants to work with, whether that’s high school and middle school players, youth, adults, adaptive athletes or high performance. There truly is something for everyone, from parents and volunteers to entry-level coaches and advanced teaching pros.

Expanding Access in South Florida

Bringing this level of coaching education to South Florida was a priority for USTA Florida, and hosting it at one of the sport’s most iconic venues made the occasion even more meaningful.

“We are thrilled to bring a training of this nature this far south, and to do it at the historic Crandon Park makes it even more special,” said Lori Burdell, USTA Florida Director of Provider Development & Support. “There is so much talent and passion for tennis in South Florida, and giving coaches in this community access to quality education is how we grow the game from the ground up. We look forward to bringing more trainings like this to the area in the future.”

The workshop is part of USTA Florida’s broader commitment to developing the next generation of coaches across the state. By expanding coaching education into new markets and communities, USTA Florida is building the infrastructure needed to serve a growing population of players and ensure that quality instruction is available wherever tennis is played.
