Day 1 Results: Top Seed Upset at USTA Florida Jr. State Championships

A No. 1 seed was toppled in the opening round, and a handful of lower seeds were sent home on Day 1 of the 68th USTA Florida “Bobby Curtis” Junior State Singles Championships, contested June 11-15, 2016, at the Florida Tennis Center in Daytona Beach (18-16s divisions) and at Sanlando Park in Altamonte Springs (14-12s divisions).

Weston’s unseeded Michael Heller, last year’s Boys’ 16s champion, shocked Boys’ 18s No. 1 seed Sean Burnette of Wesley Chapel 6-1, 6-2.

The Girls’ 18s division saw two upsets as Bradenton’s Gabrielle Goldin toppled No. 11 Danielle Obolevitch of North Miami Beach 7-6(2), 2-6, 6-2, and Tampa’s Lauren Fitz-Randolph advanced when No. 14 Kate Paulus retired with an injury leading 3-2 in the first set.

Two upsets occurred in the Boys’ 14s division as Tampa’s Roberto Rodriguez outlasted No. 12 Eric Opaciuch of Palmetto Bay 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, and Lake Mary’s Andy Mackler upended No. 16 Ivan Cedric Esguerra 6-3, 6-0.

The Girls’ 12s was the lone division with no upsets on the tournament’s opening day.
