World Team Tennis is back, and Florida has a team again. The Florida Flamingos Racquet Club will host two match nights at Amerant Bank Arena in Sunrise on Monday, December 14 and Tuesday, December 15, with first serve at 7:00 PM. USTA Florida members can save 10% on select seats using code USTAFL al momento de pagar.
A Roster Worth the Trip
Delray Beach native Coco Gauff headlines the Flamingos as a player-owner, joined by Tommy Paul, Learner Tien, Iva Jovic, Eva Lys and Brandon Nakashima. This is not an exhibition. World Team Tennis is a professional league with bonuses paid for individual and team wins, and players competing for their teammates as much as themselves.
The December 14 match brings Toronto North to Sunrise, featuring Denis Shapovalov, Leylah Fernandez, Victoria Mboko and Gabriel Diallo. The following night, the New York Empire arrives with Jessica Pegula, Frances Tiafoe, Camila Osorio and Michael Zheng.
That means two nights of matchups like Gauff against Mboko, Gauff against Pegula, Paul against Diallo and Tien against Tiafoe, all under one roof.
A Format Built for a Night Out
Each match night runs five sets: two men’s singles, two women’s singles and a mixed doubles SuperTiebreaker to close it out. Singles use no-ad scoring, so a single deciding point settles every deuce game, and the mixed doubles finale is played regardless of the score.
The result is eight players on court in one evening rather than two, with a built-in finale. The league is leaning into the arena experience as well, pairing the tennis with music, production and hospitality in the same buildings that host NBA, WNBA and NHL teams.
A Name With History
The Flamingos are not new. The club revives one of the most recognizable identities from World Team Tennis’s inaugural 1974 season, reimagining the original flamingo motif in pink and deep burgundy with a founding-year marker and a crest built around the color and energy of metropolitan Miami.
World Team Tennis was founded in 1974 by Billie Jean King and others, pioneering mixed-gender team competition and a more fan-focused vision for the sport. Over 46 seasons through 2021, the league featured Serena and Venus Williams, Steffi Graf, Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi, Martina Navratilova, Chris Evert, Björn Borg, John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova. December marks the start of its 47th season under new ownership.
