USTA Florida Invests in LED Lighting at Crandon Park

Evening tennis just got easier at the Crandon Park Tennis Center. New LED lighting on Courts 10 and 11 was completed on September 24, bringing the Key Biscayne facility to 13 lighted courts heading into the fall and winter season.

The courts had been without lights since March. Rather than simply restoring what was there, USTA Florida chose to invest in a full LED installation, a decision rooted in the organization’s Best-in-Class Facilities and Providers initiative, one of its three Big Bold Moves driving tennis growth across the state.

The new fixtures are Westgate LFX-XL Series LED flood lights, rated for 70,000 hours of life. At 5000K color temperature, they deliver the bright, even light players want for evening match play, and they are dimmable for flexibility across different uses of the courts. The fixtures are also built for Florida conditions, carrying an IP65 weather rating for wet locations and 10KV lightning surge protection. Because they are DLC Premium rated LEDs replacing older technology, they draw significantly less power and require essentially no maintenance over their lifespan.

The timing matters. As daylight hours shrink through the fall and winter, lighted courts become the difference between players getting on court after work and school or waiting until the weekend. Two additional courts mean more available playing time for leagues, programs, lessons, and open play during a busy stretch of the year.

“The addition of LED lights on Courts 10 and 11 now gives us 13 lighted courts as we head into the fall and winter season,” said Alex Rodriguez, Director of Operations at the Crandon Park Tennis Center. “We’re committed to continuing to provide a best-in-class facility and bringing tennis to all. We look forward to having everyone come out and enjoy an evening of tennis with us here at Crandon Park Tennis Center.”

The lighting project is the latest in a series of improvements at Crandon Park since USTA Florida took over operations of the facility, which features 27 courts across hard court and American green clay surfaces.
