Every USTA Florida League team has one. The person who fills the lineup, answers the group’s text late at night, finds a sub on short notice and somehow keeps everyone’s spirits up through a rain delay. Captains make league tennis work, and most of them never ask for anything in return. Now there is a way to say thank you.
The USTA League National Office is accepting nominations for the National League Captain of the Year Award, and USTA Florida is asking players across the state to nominate the captains who have made a difference for their teams. Nominations are open through November 30.
How It Works
Each of the 17 USTA Sections endorses one captain to represent them for national consideration.
USTA Florida will review every nomination submitted and select one captain to endorse on behalf of the Section. That captain will then personally complete the national nomination questions. In early 2027, the National League Committee reviews all 17 Section endorsements and selects the National League Captain of the Year.
What the Winner Receives
The national honor comes with a varsity-style jacket, recognition on a national scale, and the winner’s choice of one of the following:
- One free year of USTA membership and League fees for 2027, up to $500
- A trip for two to the 2027 US Open
Four additional captains will be named Notable Nominees, with their stories shared nationally as well.
Who Should Be Nominated
The award recognizes outstanding sportsmanship, respect and genuine passion for the USTA League program. The strongest nominees are positive figures in their tennis communities whose influence reaches beyond the scoreboard, and whose story might inspire someone else to step up and captain a team.
If that sounds like someone on your team, take a few minutes and tell us about them.
Submit a Nomination
Nominations close November 30, 2026. Florida players can submit through the 2026 USTA League Captain of the Year Nomination Form for the Florida Section.
Captains rarely nominate themselves. That part is up to the rest of you in the community who see the dedication that they pour into it every week.
