The land Crandon Park occupies was once part of the largest coconut plantation in the United States, operated by William John Matheson and his heirs. In 1940 the Matheson family donated 808.8 acres of their land to Dade County (now Miami-Dade County) for a public park. In return, county commissioner Charles H. Crandon promised that the county would build a causeway to Key Biscayne. Crandon Park has a rich history intertwined with the Miami Open, one of the world’s great tennis tournaments. It was held at Crandon Park from 1987 to 2018. The e orts of Butch and Cli Buchholz, along with Merrett Stierheim and others, led to the tournament’s relocation to this world-class facility that made Key Biscayne one of world’s most famous sites in tennis. Crandon Park was the epicenter of the Miami Open, hosting world-class players and creating memorable moments in the sport’s history
