Merit Award

This award recognizes a person who, through his/her efforts, willingness, cooperation, and participation, is most deserving of the respect and honor of all volunteers. Over time their contributions to amateur tennis in Florida, either in play or organizational work, have made a significant impact. (Previous winners are not eligible)

History: This award, given from the beginning of Florida Lawn Tennis Association, was originally named the J.E. “Doc” Webb Award, after the Florida Entrepreneur extraordinaire and tennis enthusiast from St. Petersburg. He played weekly at Bartlett Park and attained a 1955 USTA Florida Senior Doubles Ranking #4 with partner Jack Staton. The trophy housed at the USTA Florida office is inscribed with his name.

Jim Martz Media Excellence Award

This award recognizes a promoter or communicator covering Florida tennis activities, news, or insights for excellence in informing and raising awareness with the general public about tennis in Florida. (Not limited to professional journalists, Florida-based persons or organizations.)

This award includes any nominee using various print or electronic media such as newspapers, magazines, radio, television, online video broadcasts, podcasts, blogs, social media outlets or influencers.*

History: From 1976 through 1980, this award was named the “Barnett Award for Excellence in Tennis Writing”.  From 1995 through 2007, this award was named the Jim Martz Media Award. From 2008 through 2024, this award was named the “Media Excellence Award”. In 2024 USTA Florida made a proclamation to rename this award to the “Jim Martz Media Excellence Award”.

Jimmy Gantt memorial Award

This award recognizes a junior tennis player throughout the state who has overcome a physical impairment or injury and continues to compete to the best of his/her ability. In addition, he/she exhibits strong character and sportsmanship.

*NOTE: The eligibility for this award was based on outstanding achievement, sportsmanship and courage until 1984 when it was changed to the above eligibility.

HISTORY: J. Jervey Gantt graduated from the University of Florida and moved to Ocala in 1951. He became director of the Ocala Recreation Department (now Ocala Recreation & Parks) until he retired in 1980. Gantt was an avid tennis player who served as Secretary on the Executive Board of the Florida Tennis Association and was inducted into the organization’s Hall of Fame. He was instrumental in bringing tennis to the youth of Marion County. He was always encouraging children to get involved in sports including his own four children. His son, Jimmy, who died at the age of 17 of cystic fibrosis, played tennis.

This award is presented to the tournament director who has demonstrated excellent qualities and expertise in all facets of tournament administration including: accommodations for players, draw and seeding procedures, court conditions, scheduling, and adherence to all tournament regulations.

Eligibility: A tournament director of any USTA Florida sanctioned tournament–Adult, Junior or Wheelchair. (Directors of tournaments on the National Junior Schedule and tournaments that receive staff assistance with player selection, scheduling, and overall tournament administration are excluded.) If the winner is a junior tournament director, the award will be presented as the Outstanding Bobby Curtis Junior Tournament Director. If the winner is an adult tournament director, the award will be presented as the Outstanding Al Mills Memorial Adult Tournament Director.

History: The junior award is named in honor of Bobby Curtis, known as “Mr. Junior Tennis,” who for over 30 years worked to improve junior competition throughout the state for all players. The adult award is named in the memory of Dr. Alfred Mills, whose many years of dedication and commitment to competitive tennis in Florida improved the game for all participants. Dr. Mills was a past president and longtime board member of USTA Florida.
